Dock/Deck Hands split their time and responsibilities between the docks and aboard Shepler’s ferry vessels. Duties include: greeting guests and tagging their luggage for delivery to the various Mackinac Island hotels, loading and unloading vessels, collecting tickets, line handling, keeping the boat clean and tidy, and a number of other procedures on which all crew are properly trained.
Shepler’s Maintenance/Custodial team is responsible for how our customers see us; by keeping all areas of Shepler’s neat and clean we show our dedication. Duties include: cleaning restrooms, cutting grass, raking leaves, sweeping, emptying trash, minor repairs and cleaning Shepler’s boats from top to bottom.
The Marine Mechanic performs critical maintenance, diagnostics and repairs on-board elite marine equipment/vessels. Preferred certifications: Detroit Diesel, Mercruiser, Westerbeke and Yanmar. Certification is not required – we will train. Must have experience with standard tools of the trade and be able to perform repairs unsupervised. Professionalism, cleanliness and excellent customer service skills are a must.
Ticket Sellers not only sell tickets but are also responsible for other transactions as well, handling both cash and credit card transactions. Duties include: keeping the ticket office neat and clean, selling passenger tickets, registering guests’ vehicles for overnight parking, selling bike tickets, taking care of tour group tickets, acting as a general information center for our guests, assisting guests who have made online purchases (ferry and other Island attraction tickets), and last but not least, being personable and friendly!
Shepler’s Car Care Center is Shepler’s off-site overnight parking area for guests. Cast members are responsible for parking guests’ vehicles in designated areas, which include five outdoor lots and two indoor lots. Other responsibilities include: filling out the proper paperwork, filing keys, keeping the parking area and buildings clean, washing guests’ vehicles and washing tour buses.
Shuttle Drivers are responsible for shuttling guests from area hotels and campgrounds to our docks and back. Drivers also assist with guest transportation from our off-site lots and shuttling Cast Members to our various parking lots. Duties also include keeping vehicles clean, inside and out. Must have CDL.
This position is operational 5:00 am to 5:00 pm, M-F and 5:00 am until noon on Saturdays. Duties include: forklift and bobcat operation, shipping and receiving, and inventory of all incoming goods. This position also involves daily deckhand work to and from Mackinac Island.
Duties include: making and serving fine coffees, espresso and cold drinks, cleaning and maintaining bar and machinery. Hours of operation will be 7:00 am – 6:00 pm, with two opposite shifts.
A fun first job for 14-17 years olds. Work outside greeting guests and directing them where to park their vehicles. This position involves communicating with other cast members via hand-held radio in an effort to fill Shepler’s parking lots to capacity. Cast members rotate between greeter, waver and parker positions throughout the day.
The Ship Store Retail Assistant helps customers with purchases at Shepler’s Ship Store. Requirements include: a friendly attitude and retail experience. Knowledge of marine equipment is a plus, as this person will also help customers find and order boat parts.
Plan itineraries for Tour Groups, School and Scout Groups, arrange transportation for weddings and conventions, and have a working knowledge of all area attractions. General office duties, including answering phones, selling cruise tickets, mail merges, filing, and selling season passes. This person works closely with the cruise department and may be called upon to help with Lighthouse Cruises and Private Charters. For 2017, this position will start March 1st for training. All other years, the position will go from April 1st to October 31st.
This is the first person that guests see when they come into the office. Duties will include: answering phones, selling season and commuter passes, mail merges, hotel shuttle dispatching, some secretarial duties, and ordering office supplies. A general knowledge of the area is needed for helping guests on the phone. This is a seasonal position from April – October.
